Safety
Pruning
|
The
objective of safety pruning is to reduce the risk of
tree failure. Safety pruning of trees is the removal
of dead, diseased or dying limbs that may pose a
safety risk. Often, safety pruning includes the
pruning of trees over driveways, patios, roofs,
pools, etc. The pruning helps to ensure a safer
environment. Also, by properly cutting limbs back to
the branch bark ridge it allows the tree to heal
properly.

Vista
Pruning |
Trees,
although beautiful in their own right, often block
views of pleasing landscapes, valleys, bodies of
water, and other desirable views. The views can
often be enhanced by removing select live branches
from the top, sides or bottom of tree. Skilled crown
thinning, crown raising, and crown reduction of
trees often makes the tree look its best and can
create openings to stunning views.
|
Selective Pruning |
Crown Cleaning is the
removal of dead, diseased, detached and broken
branches. This pruning type also done to reduce the
risk of branches falling from the tree and harming
properties or persons. This pruning is also used to
reduce the spread of insects, diseases and decay
from the dead or dying branches to the rest of the
tree. Selective pruning may be done when you are not
cleaning the whole crown. This can be done by
specifying the diameter of the limbs to be removed.
For example, clean all limbs 1” in diameter or
more.
Crown Thinning is the removal of select limbs to
reduce the density of the crown. Thinning will allow
for more light and air penetration which helps
maintain the foliage of the interior of the crown.
Usually this type of thinning is done in percentages
if not the entire crown. For example, remove approx
10% of the foliage from the Crown. This pruning can
also be specified by the size of the limbs to be
removed. For example, remove limbs ¼” to 1” in
diameter.
Crown Reduction is the selective removal of limbs
and stems to decrease the height or spread of the
tree. This pruning is also done for clearance of
utility wires, to clear growth back from over or
against roofs and other structures, and to remove
growth from in other trees.
Crown Raising is the removal of lower limbs from the
canopy to provide clearance for buildings, lights,
vehicles, and pedestrian walk ways. The clearance
level is usually set at a specific height. For
example, raise 10 feet about the roof. |
Shrub
Pruning |
A
common reason for shrub pruning is to reduce or
maintain their size. Traditional shearing, or the
longer lasting and more natural hand pruning, can be
completed for your desired results.
You can prune shrubs to reinvigorate and rejuvenate
them, maintain their size or reduce them in size,
shape prune them (informal or formal), and
pollarding. Please contact one of our Arborists
for assistance in making the proper choice.

Crown

reduce weight to a specified percent (e.g. 15% of
canopy)
Crown Reduce: Decrease height or spread on entire
tree or one section.
Crown Raise: To elevate lower limbs on canopy and
provide clearance.

Cabling & Bracing
|
In Arboriculture, the use
of support systems in trees has been adopted since
the early 1900s. Today’s guidelines for
installing support systems (cables, braces and
support rods) are set by the American National
Standards Institute (ANSI) in conjunction with the
International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).
Support systems are installed in trees to help
provide support to individual limbs and even whole
trees. Cables and braces act to limit the movement
of limbs thus helping to protect them from
failure. When one of our Arborists recommends
cabling or bracing for a tree or limb it is to
help prolong the effects a defect may have on the
tree or may help to prevent the failure of an
already weakened tree. Between using steel strand
cables or the newly introduced cobra systems,
LaMay's can recommend a support system that best
helps to preserve your investment.
