| Gap
Issue- Less than one page in the 47 page Nelson Report
addressed safety issues. Part of one page was devoted to
the gap Issue. Although extremely important, it is only
one of a myriad of safety issues relating to both
passengers and the communities located adjacent to main
line. The handling of the gap issue by the LIRR has been
an absolute disgrace. We should be aware that the LIRR
ignored the problem for twenty years despite over 900
complaints. A Newsday investigation found that the LIRR
recorded more than 800 gap incidents from 1995 to 2007.
Until a young girl lost her life at Woodside Station in
Queens County, N.Y. in 2006, the LIRR gap matter was
mostly unknown to many riders. The LIRR’s handling of
the gap issue raises concern about the safety of commuters
and the communities on Long Island. Except for brief
mention of the gap issue, The Nelson Report completely
disregarded the myriad of safety issues that are
associated with the Third Track Project. |
