| Track Fires- It has been said that track fires have been a common
occurrence because the LIRR has not been maintaining their
rights of way. According to the Nelson Report, “little
if any clearing has occurred in the past five years, and
unchecked vegetation can be dangerous due to obscuring
markers used by engineers and threatening to choke off
vital signals and communication systems.”
