Dangerous Cargo- The sad reality is that since 1997 the NY & Atlantic Railway has been transporting freight on the main line of the LIRR. Citizens are concerned that this unmonitored, dangerous freight cargo including hazardous waste, radioactive materials, toxic waste, garbage and 30,000 gallon tank cars of liquid propane gas is passing perilously close to our homes, schools, schoolyards, playgrounds and businesses.  And now, to add insult to injury, the LIRR intends to substantially increase the transportation of this unmonitored dangerous cargo.

The propane tankers are generally linked together as two (60,000 gallons) or three cars (90,000 gallons) and are shipped to Paraco Gas in Riverhead. Paraco is the largest propane distributor on Long Island and supplies the entire east end of long Island. This propane is coming from Canada and should be more safely and efficiently transported by boat.

Additional freight traffic will magnify levels of noise, vibrations, water, and air pollution. Derailments and track fires will occur with greater frequency with increasing traffic volume.
