| Quality
of Commuter Service- LIRR President Helena Williams has stated that on
time performance can be improved by offering a “passing
lane” around disabled trains. After years of observing
LIRR service, there have been relatively few times when a
disabled train held up other trains. There are many ways
to work around the disabled train problem without paying
up to a billion dollars for a “passing lane.” There
already exist many additional tracks on rights of way that
can be used to temporarily store disabled trains. The idea
of building an additional track to store disabled trains
is misguided and unprecedented. There are undoubtedly many
cost effective alternatives to improve on-time performance
that won’t cost a billion dollars to implement such as
the investment in improving switches and transformers to
significantly reduce “service stoppage” and extreme
delays during even the slightest of adverse weather
conditions (cold, rain, snow). |
