On the evening of May 31st, Garden City High School Seniors, Alexandra Russo and  Catherine McTiernan were named recipients of the Garden City Estates Property Owners Association's Mort Yuter Scholarship. Estates POA President, William Slattery, made the annoucement at the Garden City  High School Awards Night. Alexandra and Catherine were each presented with a $500 check.

The award is named in honor of long time village resident Mort Yuter, who exemplified the very best in civic spirit and dedication. Mort moved out of state last year to live closer to his daughter.

In keeping with the legacy of Mort Yuter, the scholarship is awarded to two high school seniors who have not only achieved academic excellence in the classroom, but have also demonstrated a superior level of involvement in local civic causes. The Estates POA Scholarship Committee was Co-Chaired by William Slattery and Vincent Fusco. The final winners were selected by members of the Garden City High School Guidance Department Review Board presided over by Director of Guidance Gina Christel and her assistant, Maureen Imbesi.

This coming Fall, Alexandra Bruno be attending Princeton University and Catherine McTiernan will be attending University of Richmond. The Estates POA wishes much success to both Alexandra and Catherine as well as the rest of the Class of 2012.
